Our Charlotte office participated in the national We Care program sponsored by Herman Miller in association with the Boys & Girls Club of America. Each year Herman Miller works with the Charlotte Architecture & Design community, Geiger, and Alfred Williams & Company to bring the kids at the Boys & Girls Club a day of Christmas good cheer. The We Care event provides children a creative outlet, day of fun, and the opportunity to make gifts for family and friends, which is something that many of these kids may not be able to do. The Boys & Girls Club Director said that We Care “gives each and every member of the Boys & Girl Club a chance to experience Christmas – even if just for a few hours. For some, that may be the only Christmas they get. For that, I can only simply say, thanks you.”

For us, this year was a lot of fun. It brought us together in the office as we prepped for the day and also gave us an outlet to give back to the community which is what it’s all about. Our craft was a candle holder that each child decorated and was able to give as a gift. The best part of the day was helping a couple of kids make one for each other’s mom and hearing the kids say, “this is your moms favorite color, right?” Overall it was a hit, we made 72 candles and ran out of materials!

Boulder joined our community partner, Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA), for a day to help them in their Food Bank. EFAA’s mission is to “help those in our community whose immediate needs for food, shelter and other basic necessities cannot be adequately met by other means, and supports their efforts toward financial stability or self-sufficiency.” EFAA is entering its 100th year and we’re grateful to be one of the many organizations that supports their cause.

We worked with EFAA all day to help with everything related to their Food Bank; walking patrons around the food pantry, deep cleaning the food pantry, re-stocking and organizing shelves, preparing food bags for delivery, cleaning and stocking the basement, and any task we could do! The time we saved volunteers allowed them the opportunity to work with more Clients and facilitate their annual toy donation program.

We were lucky to not only work with a great organization but also to enjoy time outside of the office with our co-workers, nothing makes you feel like part of team more than counting cans and mopping floors!

Velorama: Race. Party. Music

505Design had the exciting opportunity to work on Velorama, a 3-day music festival featuring food trucks, the Denver Flea, a bicycle expo, and a world class professional bicycle race – the Colorado Classic. As a company that is enthusiastic about the outdoors and physical fitness, we’re energized to work on this one of a kind project.

Our process began by creating a Vision Book for Velorama that captured the excitement of a high energy music festival combined with the diversity of cycling culture. The goal of this festival and race is to make high-caliber road racing a sustainable business venture that will impact the accessibility and culture of the sport by engaging and entertaining both casual and die hard cycling fans.

This Vision Book included a bird’s eye view perspective rendering that captured the scale and excitement of the festival. Once the concept was complete, 505Design worked on developing the festival plan and focused on creating a positive visitor experience in a challenging urban setting. We created a lively temporary environmental graphic and wayfinding program for the outdoor festival for fans and users to navigate. 505Design got to celebrate our work on this project by visiting the festival over its 3-day run.

For some, that may be the only “Christmas” they get. For that, I can only simply say, thank you.”

505Design BLDR hosted a neighborhood party for the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA). We helped raise over $1,000 worth of presents for those in need this holiday season. Our donations contributed to the holiday gift room at EFAA that allows families to select age and gender appropriate gifts for their family members. This continues our partnership working with EFAA throughout the year.

International Market Place Opening

Our design approach to International Market Place (IMP) finds a balance between memory and prophecy, a way to embrace the rich heritage of the site while translating those qualities in a fresh, contemporary way that resonates with the iconic past of the place. Design decisions are informed from three guiding principles:

1. Perptuate the Legacy of the Queen: The Queen’s mission was to provide, in perpetuity, quality healthcare for native Hawaiians and the people of Hawaii.

2. Celebrate the History of the Land (Kaluaokau) and its People: The project is informed by the rich, natural, and cultural history of Kaluaokau, the land which the property sits on.

3. Revitalize IMP as the Signature Gathering Place in Waikiki: Restore IMP as a world-class destination for retail, entertainment, and culture.

The mall is planned around a 150 year-old, landmark Banyan tree, as well as a number of other significant trees that drive the layout of the project. The Puka’s (courts) and terraced levels are designed to highlight these legacy trees and create visual connection between the Grand Lanai and the ground plane.

505Design + HomeAid

This summer, 505Design BLDR teamed with HomeAid to collect diapers, wipes, and formula for struggling families in our neighborhood. From Mother’s Day to Father’s Day we joined with the surrounding business to bring essentials to the 4 in 10 mothers in America that have to choose between buying diapers and other necessities.

In total we gathered over 1,000 diapers (1,384 to be exact) that were donated to the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) of Boulder. Our combined community contribution added over 2,400 diapers to the nearly empty shelves of the organization and rendered the volunteers speechless.

“Thank you HomeAid Colorado505Design, and Norris Design for collecting over 2,500 diapers for EFAA! What an amazing contribution! Our food bank is always in need of diapers to help keep babies, as HomeAid puts it, ‘clean, dry, happy and healthy.’ :)” – Emergency Family Assistance Association

It’s 5:05 Here!

The Charlotte office recently hosted the first of what we hope to be many community gatherings. It’s 5:05 Here is a monthly, after-work mixer at the 505Charlotte office that includes a casual couch conversation with interesting, curious, funny, and inspirational leaders in the Charlotte design community. This is a down-to-earth event where creatives can make connections, and more importantly, FRIENDS.

On Thursday, Rhett Crocker, President of LandDesign, participated in our first talk, an informal conversation with 505Design Partners John Ward and Jim Babinchak, about the 505Design/LandDesign alliance. Over beers and snacks they discussed how we became partners on various projects, how our relationship began, why our bond is special, and where we are going in the future.

A big thank you to all that attended our first talk and keep following us for more information on the next It’s 5:05 Here!

505Design enhanced and revitalized Arrowhead Towne Center by introducing warmth, color, and desert charm to the project. The repositioning of the center will draw in both existing and new customers, upscale tenants, and will transform the experience into one that inspires all who visit.
